Essential Oil | Leptospermum scoparium

Manuka Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves and lateral branches of Leptospermum scoparium, a small flowering tree native to New Zealand. Held in deep cultural significance by Maori, it has an aromatic character that is spicy, herbaceous, and complex, with a warmth and depth that makes it interesting both as a functional ingredient and as a fragrance material in its own right. Its chemistry is also distinct, dominated by beta-triketones including leptospermone and its related compounds, a compound class responsible for both its unique aromatic profile and many of its skin-active properties.

The opening is spicy and herbaceous, with a warm, resinous quality and a fresh lift underneath. It is drier and more complex than tea tree, without the sharp medicinal edge, and has a pleasantly earthy mid-note that settles into something faintly woody and balsamic. Cis-calamenene contributes an additional depth and warmth. As a perfumery material it works best as a functional top-to-heart note in natural and botanical compositions, adding a distinctly southern hemisphere character.

Usage and Blending
