Fragrance Material | Absolute

Labdanum Absolute is a solvent-extracted resin material from Cistus ladanifer, used in perfumery to add ambered warmth, leathery depth, and fixation. Dense and expressive, it provides structure and longevity in darker bases and amber constructions.

Labdanum Absolute presents a rich balsamic profile with amber warmth, leather, smoke, and soft animalic nuances. Sweet resinous facets are balanced by dry woods and faint spice, giving a rounded, cohesive impression rather than sharp intensity. It reads deep and textural, contributing weight and cohesion to a formula.

Labdanum Absolute functions primarily as a base note and fixative. Thee absolute is very viscous and may need gentle warming or dilution in a solvent to make it workable.

Recommended concentration: 0.1–3% (high impact; start low)

Particularly effective in:
Amber, oriental, leather, and chypre structures

Blends well with:
Vanilla materials, benzoin, and amber accords
Woods (sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver)
Florals (rose, jasmine, orange blossom)
Oakmoss, patchouli, and musks

Thick, viscous consistency, so pre-dilution in perfumer’s alcohol for easier handling and accurate dosing

Suitable for incense-style home fragrance and candles where permitted

The first rule of perfumery: never work neat.

Every professional perfumer works in dilution. It's not a beginner shortcut, it's the correct way to evaluate and blend aromatic materials. At full concentration, materials smell harsh, inaccurate, and often overwhelming. You're not smelling the material, you're smelling too much of it.

When you dilute a 5ml aromatic material to a 10% solution, you extend it to 50ml of working stock. That's five times the material to experiment with, evaluate, and blend, without wasting a drop of something precious and expensive.

For powder materials like ambroxan, calone, and vanillin, dilution isn't optional, it's essential. Powders need to be fully dissolved in ethanol before they can be accurately measured, evaluated, or incorporated into a formula. Without this step, you simply can't work with them properly.

This bundle gives you everything you need to start working correctly from the first session.
