Fragrance Material | Aroma Molecule

Hedione is one of the most important aroma chemicals in modern perfumery. Developed by Firmenich in the early 1960s and famously used at an unprecedented concentration in Dior Eau Sauvage (1966), it changed the way perfumers thought about building a floral composition. The molecule belongs to the jasmonate family and delivers a clean, diffusive, light jasmine quality that reads as natural without being heavy or indolic. It is not a direct jasmine replacer but a jasmine modifier and floral brightener of exceptional versatility, and its combination of very high usage levels, outstanding stability, and extremely low cost makes it one of the best-value materials in any perfumer’s toolkit.

Fresh, light, oily, and diffusive, with a natural jasmine quality that is more transparent and airy than heavy or narcotic. The green, slightly fruity facet on the opening gives it a naturalness and brightness that is difficult to replicate with other materials. In the heart it settles into a persistent, clean floral character that blends seamlessly with almost everything around it without imposing its own character too strongly. At an ROI of 65 it is one of the more diffident materials in the palette, doing its work quietly and requiring higher concentrations than many aroma chemicals to be clearly perceptible on its own. At 10% average use and up to 50% maximum in a compound, it is a material you can use generously.

Hedione works as a jasmine-type floral modifier, diffusive top-to-heart note, natural floral brightener, and blending enhancer across virtually every fragrance family. Excellent stability across fine fragrance, personal care, soap, candles, and incense makes it one of the most universally applicable materials available.

Recommended concentration: 1% minimum, 10% average, up to 50% maximum in a finished compound. Exceptionally good value at this use level given the price per gram.
