Dried Crushed Leaves | Melissa officinalis

Lemon Balm is a softly aromatic herb valued for its gentle citrus scent and versatility across aromatic, herbal, and culinary applications. More delicate than lemon verbena, it offers a mild lemon character layered over fresh green herbal notes.

Raw: Light, green, and gently lemony with subtle grassy undertones. The aroma is soft and calming rather than sharp or zesty.

Heated / Smouldered: When warmed, lemon balm releases a mild herbal-citrus scent that is subtle and slightly sweet. It is not strongly perfuming but blends well with florals and lighter herbs.

Infused / Tea: Produces a pale, mild infusion with soft lemon notes and a smooth, lightly grassy finish.

Lemon balm has been cultivated in Europe for centuries and was a staple of traditional monastic gardens. It has long been used in herbal preparations, cordials, and botanical infusions.

In aromatic and creative practice, lemon balm is used to:
~ Add gentle citrus-green softness to incense blends
~ Complement florals such as rose and lavender
~ Enhance light herbal potpourri mixes

In culinary and beverage applications, it is commonly used in:
~ Herbal teas and calming evening blends
~ Botanical syrups and infused waters
~ Light desserts and fruit preparations
~ Craft beverage and herbal formulation

Its mild character makes it ideal for blends where a subtle citrus note is desired without overpowering other ingredients.

The first rule of perfumery: never work neat.

Every professional perfumer works in dilution. It's not a beginner shortcut, it's the correct way to evaluate and blend aromatic materials. At full concentration, materials smell harsh, inaccurate, and often overwhelming. You're not smelling the material, you're smelling too much of it.

When you dilute a 5ml aromatic material to a 10% solution, you extend it to 50ml of working stock. That's five times the material to experiment with, evaluate, and blend, without wasting a drop of something precious and expensive.

For powder materials like ambroxan, calone, and vanillin, dilution isn't optional, it's essential. Powders need to be fully dissolved in ethanol before they can be accurately measured, evaluated, or incorporated into a formula. Without this step, you simply can't work with them properly.

This bundle gives you everything you need to start working correctly from the first session.
