Dried Peel Pieces | Citrus aurantium

Bitter Orange Peel is a classic aromatic botanical valued for its dry citrus brightness and subtle bitterness. Less sweet than common orange peel, it offers a sharper, more refined citrus character that brings lift and structure to aromatic blends and creative formulations.

Raw: Dry, zesty, and lightly bitter with green citrus notes and a faint woody edge. Less sugary than sweet orange, with a crisp, peel-forward aroma.

In Incense: When gently heated or burned, bitter orange peel releases a warm, slightly resinous citrus note that blends easily with spices, woods, and resins.

Bitter orange has been used for centuries in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions for its aromatic peel and blossoms. In aromatic practice, the dried peel is used to introduce freshness, contrast, and top-note lift to incense blends, potpourri, and botanical compositions.

Bitter orange peel is commonly paired with spices such as cinnamon and clove, as well as resins like frankincense or benzoin, where it adds clarity and balance. Beyond aromatic use, it also has a long history of use in culinary, herbal, and beverage traditions, particularly where a bitter citrus note is desired.

The first rule of perfumery: never work neat.

Every professional perfumer works in dilution. It's not a beginner shortcut, it's the correct way to evaluate and blend aromatic materials. At full concentration, materials smell harsh, inaccurate, and often overwhelming. You're not smelling the material, you're smelling too much of it.

When you dilute a 5ml aromatic material to a 10% solution, you extend it to 50ml of working stock. That's five times the material to experiment with, evaluate, and blend, without wasting a drop of something precious and expensive.

For powder materials like ambroxan, calone, and vanillin, dilution isn't optional, it's essential. Powders need to be fully dissolved in ethanol before they can be accurately measured, evaluated, or incorporated into a formula. Without this step, you simply can't work with them properly.
