Pure Essential Oil | Matricaria chamomilla

Intensely blue and richly complex, Blue Chamomile Essential Oil is one of the most visually striking materials in the perfumer's palette, and one of the most nuanced. Steam distilled from the flowers of Matricaria chamomilla, its extraordinary deep indigo colour is not present in the living plant at all; chamazulene, the compound responsible, forms only during the distillation process itself, a transformation that feels almost alchemical. The result is an oil prized as much for its aromatic depth as for its well-documented skin-soothing properties.

Warm and herbaceous; faintly apple-like on the opening, hay-like and a cool, medicinal edge that keeps it from reading as floral. It is less fruity and more serious than Roman chamomile, more herbal than pharmaceutical. On a blotter it develops slowly, settling into a warm, woody-herbal drydown with genuine staying power for a middle note material.

Blue Chamomile works primarily as a heart note with fixative qualities and strong crossover into skincare formulation.

Recommended concentration: 0.5–5% in finished fragrance formulations; follow IFRA and relevant cosmetic guidelines for leave-on skin applications.

Particularly effective in:

Aromatic, fougère, and herbal-green compositions
Floral heart accords where softness and depth are needed without sharpness.
Chamomile-forward aromatherapy and wellness blends
Skincare and cosmetic formulations where anti-inflammatory properties are relevant
Hay, tobacco, and coumarin-adjacent base structures

Blends well with:

Florals like lavender, neroli, rose, geranium, ylang ylang
Citrus like bergamot, grapefruit, lemon
Herbs like clary sage, rosemary, marjoram
Resins like frankincense, benzoin
Woody and earthy notes like patchouli, cedarwood, vetiver

Suitable for non-perfumery applications including skincare, aromatherapy blends, and candles where a warm, herbaceous character is desired.

The blue colour will stain fabrics, surfaces, and equipment, so use with care and clean up promptly.
