Essential Oil | Juniperus communis

Steam distilled from the berries of Juniperus communis grown in the Himalayan foothills of India, this oil brings the essential character of juniper in its most approachable form: piney and fresh on the opening, with a warm balsamic depth underneath and a faint citrusy brightness that comes from its high limonene content. It is the oil that gives gin its distinctive aromatic character, a fact that makes it immediately relatable to a wide audience and a useful shorthand for communicating what it smells like.

The opening is crisp and coniferous, led by alpha-pinene, with a fresh, resinous quality that reads as clean and invigorating rather than medicinal. The myrcene content adds a green, slightly resinous depth, and the limonene brings a subtle citrus lift that keeps the opening from feeling heavy. As it settles the piney sharpness softens into a warmer, balsamic heart with a woody, dry quality and a quiet earthiness underneath. It is one of the cleaner and more transparent of the woody-coniferous essential oils, and one of the most versatile in blending.

Juniperberry Essential Oil works as a top-to-heart note, coniferous modifier, and fresh woody anchor.

Recommended concentration: 1-5% in finished fragrance formulations; follow IFRA and relevant cosmetic guidelines for leave-on skin applications.

Particularly effective in:

Fougere, woody aromatic, and fresh masculine compositions
Coniferous and forest accords alongside pine, fir, cypress, and galbanum
Chypre structures needing a clean, dry green top note
Gin and botanical-inspired fragrance themes
Fresh and herbal aromatherapy blends
Personal care including body washes, shampoos, and cleansers where a clean, fresh character is desired

Blends well with:

Coniferous and woody materials: cedarwood, pine, cypress, galbanum, fir
Citrus: bergamot, grapefruit, lemon
Herbs: lavender, clary sage, rosemary
Earthy and resinous: vetiver, patchouli, frankincense, labdanum
Spice: black pepper, cardamom

Suitable for non-perfumery applications including candles and home fragrance (within IFRA limits).

Note: this is Juniperus communis distilled from the berries, the safest and most widely used form of juniper oil. It should not be confused with juniper wood oil or Juniperus sabina oil, which contain compounds not suitable for topical use.
