Fragrance Material | Pure Aroma Molecule

Sweet, waxy, and warmly citrusy, Aldehyde C-10 is the most celebrated of the aliphatic aldehydes in perfumery, and the one most directly associated with the luminous, soapy brightness that defines the classic aldehydic floral genre. A ten-carbon straight-chain aldehyde occurring naturally in citrus peel oils, it is a key component of the aldehyde cocktail that Ernest Beaux used to create Chanel No. 5 in 1921, alongside C-11 and C-12, and it remains one of the most referenced aroma chemicals in the history of fine fragrance. To understand what aldehydes do in perfumery, start here.

Softer and rounder than C-8, with less of the sharp fatty edge and more warmth. The opening is sweet and waxy, orange peel-bright, with a fatty citrus quality that reads as simultaneously fresh and richly textural. It is more forgiving than its lighter siblings in the aldehyde series, with a longer odour life of 10 hours on a smelling strip and a relative odour impact of 500, still extremely powerful but more workable at the bench. At low concentrations it adds a luminous, abstract quality that lifts florals off the skin and gives a composition that indefinable “radiance” quality associated with classic French perfumery.

Aldehyde C-10 works as a top-to-heart note modifier, citrus-floral brightener, and classic aldehydic lift material.

Recommended concentration: 0.02% minimum, 0.2% average, up to 3.6% maximum in a finished compound. Pre-dilute before use.

Particularly effective in:

Classic aldehydic floral fine fragrance structures
Eau de cologne and neroli-forward citrus compositions
Iris, freesia, peony, and ionone-complex floral accords
Gardenia and white floral heart accords needing waxy lift
Bergamot, grapefruit, and lime-forward top note structures
Soap fragrance and fabric care where a clean, bright aldehydic character is desired (rated excellent)

Blends well with:

Resins: olibanum (frankincense) for a classic accord
Citrus and herbal materials: petitgrain
Florals: phenethyl alcohol, jasmine, rose, neroli
Fixative esters: methyl cinnamate helps anchor and extend the aldehyde
Other aldehydes: C-8, C-9, C-11, C-12 for layered aldehydic effects
Often used with: coumarin, Hedione, Iso E Super
