Pure Essential Oil | Chrysopogon zizanioides

Vetiver Essential Oil is one of perfumery's great base materials, a fixed point around which entire compositions are built. Steam distilled from the roots of Chrysopogon zizanioides, a tall perennial grass cultivated across tropical regions, it is a material of extraordinary depth and staying power, capable of anchoring a fragrance on skin for hours after everything else has faded. This is the Indonesian expression of vetiver: darker, smokier, and more resinous than its Haitian counterpart, with a raw, rooty intensity that mellows over time into something genuinely complex.

The opening is dense and assertive, earthy, woody, and smoky, with a raw rooty quality and a faint, slightly medicinal edge. Indonesian vetiver sits darker than Haitian vetiver, which tends toward a cleaner, more refined earthiness with greater transparency. The Java oil is heavier, more resinous, and more overtly smoky, with a deep balsamic undertone and less of the delicate, almost citrusy brightness that characterises the best Haitian batches. As it develops on skin the sharpness recedes into a warm, dry, cedar-like depth with hints of leather and earth that can persist for hours. It is a material that rewards patience; smelling it too soon gives only part of the picture.

Vetiver Essential Oil works primarily as a base note and fixative with exceptional tenacity.

Recommended concentration: 0.5-5% in finished fragrance formulations. Start at the lower end, as its tenacity and density mean a little carries a long way.

Particularly effective in:

Woody, oriental, and chypre base structures
Masculine and unisex compositions needing earthy grounding
Leather accords and tobacco-adjacent bases
Fixing and extending volatile top notes in a formula
Meditation and grounding aromatherapy blends
Candles and incense where a deep, smoky earthy character is desired

Blends well with:

Woods: cedarwood, sandalwood, patchouli, oud
Resins and balsams: labdanum, benzoin, frankincense
Florals: rose, jasmine, ylang ylang
Citruses: bergamot, grapefruit (for contrast and lift)
Musks and ambers as a base extension
Vetiver-adjacent materials: Vetiveryl Acetate, Iso E Super

Suitable for non-perfumery applications including candles, home fragrance, and incense where a warm, smoky, earthy character is desired (within IFRA limits).
