Essential Oil | Cananga odorata

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is produced through fractional distillation, with the oil collected in successive cuts as distillation progresses. The 2nd grade is the third fraction collected, sitting deeper in the distillation sequence than the Extra and 1st grades. Where the Extra captures the lightest, most delicate and volatile notes, the 2nd has moved past those into a richer, more resinous register: less sweet on the opening, with more depth, more warmth, and a slightly medicinal quality that makes it useful where you want ylang ylang’s body without its most piercing top note.

For reference across the grade range: Extra is the lightest and sweetest. 1st is slightly deeper but still very sweet. 2nd is deeper still, less sweet, and more rounded. 3rd is the heaviest, approaching base note territory. Complete is the full distillation combined.

Sweet and floral but in a fuller, more substantive way than the Extra grade, with the creamy tropical quality of ylang ylang now sitting on a warmer, slightly more resinous base. The opening has less of the piercing brightness of the earlier cuts and more of the balsamic, slightly woody depth that develops as distillation progresses. Jasmine, champaca, and frangipani remain in the aromatic family; the tropical fruit quality is present but less pronounced. It is a material with genuine staying power in a formula and works well as a middle-to-base note anchor in compositions where the Extra grade would be too light.

Ylang Ylang 2nd works as a rich floral middle-to-base note, warm exotic modifier, and natural aromatic base in fine fragrance and personal care.

Recommended concentration: start at 0.5-2% and evaluate carefully before increasing. Use with restraint; ylang ylang at any grade can overwhelm a composition.

Particularly effective in:

Floral and floral oriental fine fragrance where body and warmth are the brief
Oriental and amber compositions needing a natural floral depth note
Tropical and exotic floral accords
Personal care: creams, lotions, body wash, massage blends
Soap and fabric care

Blends well with:

White florals: jasmine, tuberose, neroli, orange blossom
Exotic florals: champaca, frangipani, cassie
Woods: rosewood, vetiver, sandalwood, patchouli
Resins: opopanax, benzoin, Peru balsam
Citrus: bergamot for a contrasting fresh top
