Absolute | Vanilla planifolia

Rich, smoky, and complex, Vanilla Absolute one of perfumery's most beloved naturals made. Vanilla Absolute in its undiluted form is a dense, resinous extract that brings genuine depth and dark sweetness to any composition. In its undiluted form it is a thick, viscous material that rewards careful handling; a little goes a long way, while a 10% dilution in Di Propylene Glycol brings it into a fluid, workable form without compromising its depth or character.

Not the clean, sweet vanilla of food flavouring. Vanilla Absolute carries a dark, animalic richness that is warm and resinous at its core, with phenolic, tarry, and smoky facets that give it complexity. Woody undertones provide structure beneath the sweetness. On a smelling strip it develops slowly, with an odour life of around 6 hours, revealing its full character over time.

Vanilla Absolute works as a base note, fixative, and blending bridge between sweet and dark accords.

Recommended concentration: 0.05–0.5% typical usage in a finished compound, up to 5% maximum. If working with the pure absolute, pre-dilute in DPG or alcohol before weighing for accuracy.

Particularly effective in:

Oriental, gourmand, and ambery compositions
Tobacco and leather accords where a dark, phenolic sweetness is needed
Chypre bases as a soft, resinous anchor
Boosting and rounding other vanilla or coumarin-forward materials

Blends well with:
Resins and balsams like benzyl benzoate, labdanum, tolu balsam
Musks
Tobacco, hay, and coumarin materials
Oud, sandalwood, and other dark woods
Spices like clove, cinnamon, cardamom

Suitable for non-perfumery applications such as candles and home fragrance where a warm, smoky vanilla depth is desired (within IFRA limits, see CAS number below).

Start conservatively as the phenolic and tarry facets can dominate at higher concentrations, particularly in lighter compositions.

Essential Dilution Starter - For Beginners

The first rule of perfumery: never work neat.

Every professional perfumer works in dilution. It's not a beginner shortcut, it's the correct way to evaluate and blend aromatic materials. At full concentration, materials smell harsh, inaccurate, and often overwhelming. You're not smelling the material, you're smelling too much of it.

When you dilute a 5ml aromatic material to a 10% solution, you extend it to 50ml of working stock. That's five times the material to experiment with, evaluate, and blend, without wasting a drop of something precious and expensive.

For powder materials like ambroxan, calone, and vanillin, dilution isn't optional, it's essential. Powders need to be fully dissolved in ethanol before they can be accurately measured, evaluated, or incorporated into a formula. Without this step, you simply can't work with them properly.

This bundle gives you everything you need to start working correctly from the first session.
