Essential Oil | Origanum vulgare

Steam distilled from the leaves and aerial parts of Origanum vulgare, the common oregano of Mediterranean and Eastern European herb traditions, Oregano Essential Oil is among the most potent and phenol-rich essential oils in common use. Its aroma is immediately recognisable: warm, herbaceous, and deeply spicy, with the same bold, characteristic note as fresh dried oregano but concentrated and magnified. It is not a subtle material, and it is not one for casual use undiluted, but handled correctly it is genuinely versatile across aromatherapy, functional blending, and as a spice note in more complex fragrance compositions.

The opening is assertive and herbaceous, with a warm spiciness driven primarily by carvacrol and thymol, the same phenolic compounds found in thyme oil and responsible for oregano’s distinctive medicinal edge. There is a woody, slightly resinous depth underneath, and a faint sweetness that becomes more apparent on dilution. Para-cymene gives the oil a light, slightly citrusy freshness that lifts the heavier phenolic character. In perfumery it functions as a spice and herbal modifier rather than a primary note, adding depth to aromatic and fougere structures at low concentrations.

Oregano Essential Oil works as a middle note herbal and spice modifier, functional aromatherapy material, and household cleaning ingredient.

Recommended concentration: 1-2% for general topical use; 0.5-1% for facial applications. Observe IFRA limits for leave-on applications given the thymol and carvacrol content.

Spicy, herbal, and aromatic fragrance compositions at low concentrations
