Santalum austrocaledonicum is the sandalwood native to New Caledonia and Vanuatu, and one of the most compelling alternatives to Indian Mysore sandalwood available to perfumers today. Despite being a different species, it is not an inferior material but one that deserves to be evaluated on its own terms. The aromatic profile is close enough to Mysore sandalwood that it has been used by major fine fragrance houses as a direct replacement when cost and scarcity made the Indian oil impractical, and its sustainability credentials and consistent supply make it an increasingly serious choice for natural perfumery.

Smooth, creamy, and warmly woody, with a softness and richness closer to Mysore-type sandalwood than the drier, earthier Australian spicatum. The opening has a quiet sweetness and a milky, slightly honeyed quality that settles into the characteristic long-lasting sandalwood base. There is a faint rosy, almost floral facet running underneath the wood at some stages of development, and a quiet, clean creaminess throughout that makes it exceptionally easy to work with. It is a material that rounds, smooths, and anchors without ever announcing itself, which is precisely what makes good sandalwood so valuable as a base note.

New Caledonian Sandalwood works as a base note fixative, creamy woody foundation, and natural skin-safe ingredient across fine fragrance and personal care.
