Pure Essential Oil | Litsea cubeba

Litsea Cubeba aka May Chang Essential Oil is a steam-distilled essential oil obtained from the fruits of Litsea cubeba, used to deliver bright, lemony freshness with a clean, sparkling edge. Often described as a bridge between citrus peel oils and aldehydic citrus notes, it provides high impact freshness with excellent clarity.

Litsea Cubeba presents a vivid citrus profile dominated by sharp lemon and lemongrass-like facets, supported by a lightly sweet, slightly green undertone. The aroma is cleaner and more linear than lemon peel oil, with an almost aldehydic brightness that reads crisp and modern. It brings immediacy and lift without the bitterness of expressed citrus oils.

Litsea Cubeba functions primarily as a top note and freshness driver, shaping the opening of a composition.

Recommended concentration: 0.07–6%

Particularly effective in:
Citrus, fresh, and aromatic compositions
Modern colognes and clean, functional profiles

Blends well with:
Citrus oils (bergamot, lemon, sweet orange)

The first rule of perfumery: never work neat.

Every professional perfumer works in dilution. It's not a beginner shortcut, it's the correct way to evaluate and blend aromatic materials. At full concentration, materials smell harsh, inaccurate, and often overwhelming. You're not smelling the material, you're smelling too much of it.

When you dilute a 5ml aromatic material to a 10% solution, you extend it to 50ml of working stock. That's five times the material to experiment with, evaluate, and blend, without wasting a drop of something precious and expensive.

For powder materials like ambroxan, calone, and vanillin, dilution isn't optional, it's essential. Powders need to be fully dissolved in ethanol before they can be accurately measured, evaluated, or incorporated into a formula. Without this step, you simply can't work with them properly.
