How to Light Charcoal & Use Loose Incense

What is loose (resin) incense?

Loose incense is one of the oldest ways of scenting a space and is still used today in spiritual, cultural, and everyday rituals around the world.

Unlike sticks or cones, loose incense gives you full control over what you burn and how much you use, making it a slower, more tactile way to experience fragrance.

What you’ll need

  • Charcoal disc (quick-light incense charcoal)

  • Heatproof incense burner or censer

  • Heatproof surface or coaster

  • Metal tongs or chopsticks

  • Long-handled lighter, match, or candle

  • Loose incense (resins, woods, herbs, blends)

Step 1: Prepare your setup

Place your incense burner on a stable, heatproof surface, well away from flammable materials.

Using metal tongs, place the charcoal disc into the burner. Never place charcoal directly on furniture or use glass, plastic, or wood as a vessel.

Step 2: Light the charcoal

Hold the charcoal disc securely with tongs.

Using a long-handled lighter or match, apply flame to the edge of the disc.
Never hold charcoal in your fingers while lighting.

After several seconds, the charcoal will begin to spark and glow red as the heat travels through it. This can take around 10 seconds, so don’t rush it.

Step 3: Wait for the charcoal to ash over

Allow the charcoal to burn until the entire surface is covered with a light grey ash.
This usually takes a few minutes and is essential for clean, even burning.

The ignition smell may be noticeable at first but should fade once the charcoal is fully lit.

Step 4: Add the incense

Once the charcoal is fully ashed over, carefully place a small pinch of loose incense into the indentation on top of the disc.

Loose incense is very concentrated. A little goes a long way. Using too much can create excessive smoke.

You can add more incense gradually as needed.

Step 5: Let it finish naturally

The charcoal disc will slowly burn out on its own, leaving pale ash behind.

Allow both the ash and the vessel to cool completely before disposing of them.

If you need to extinguish the charcoal quickly, place the disc into a vessel of cool water.
Do not pour water directly onto the charcoal, as it can spit heat.

Safety notes

  • Charcoal and burners become extremely hot

  • Never leave burning charcoal unattended

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets

  • Always use a heatproof, stable surface

  • Do not touch the burner or charcoal until fully cooled

Helpful tips

  • To slow the burn, place a thin layer of sand or spent ash beneath the charcoal

  • If smoke becomes heavy, remove excess resin and allow airflow

  • Resin incense smells best when gently heated, not overloaded

This method rewards patience and intention. Take it slowly, start with less than you think you need, and let the scent unfold naturally.
