Absolute | Evernia prunastri
Oakmoss Absolute is one of the defining materials of twentieth-century fine fragrance. Solvent-extracted from Evernia prunastri, a lichen that grows on oak and other trees across central Europe, it is the material that gave the chypre and fougere families their foundational character: earthy, mossy, rich, green, and deeply naturalsmelling, with a body and tenacity that very few other materials can replicate. The great classical chypres, including Chanel No. 19, Mitsouko, and Miss Dior in their original formulations, depended on it heavily.
This version is processed to a low-atranol specification, reducing the concentration of the allergenic compounds atranol and chloroatranol that led to severe IFRA restrictions on conventional oakmoss absolute, while retaining the essential aromatic character. It is the most usable form of real oakmoss currently available to perfumers working within IFRA guidelines.
