Absolute | Viola odorata L.

Violet leaf absolute is one of the more distinctive naturals in fine perfumery: intensely green, watery, and slightly earthy, with the freshly-cut stem character of the violet plant rather than the flower itself. It smells nothing like the sweet, powdery floral note most people associate with violets. For that check out Violet Accord. This is the leaf, extracted by solvent, and it carries the raw, living quality of green plant matter in a form that is both tenacious and surprisingly versatile as a modifier. A little goes a long way.

The opening is sharply green and slightly watery, with a fresh, slightly metallic quality and the specific character of crushed violet leaves rather than any generalised “green” note. There is a quiet earthy undertone running underneath, and a tender, faintly floral quality that gestures toward the flower without ever becoming sweet or powdery. It is a complex and unusual material that reads very differently at different concentrations: at low levels it adds naturalness, transparency, and a dewy green freshness; at higher levels it can become quite dominant and polarising. Evaluate carefully on a blotter in dilution before building into a formula.

Violet Leaf Absolute works as a green modifier, natural freshness note, and transparent top-to-heart transition material in fine fragrance and luxury personal care.

Recommended concentration: start at 0.1-0.5% in a finished compound and evaluate before increasing; average use around 1-2%. This is a potent and concentrated absolute; always evaluate diluted.

Particularly effective in:

Chypre and floral chypre structures where a fresh green naturalness is wanted
Rose and violet floral compositions as a green, stemmy modifier
Soliflore and transparent floral fine fragrance
Fresh, aquatic, and ozonic compositions needing a natural green anchor
Luxury personal care where a natural green note adds botanical character

Blends well with:

Florals: rose, iris, jasmine, osmanthus
Green: galbanum, tomato leaf at very low levels
Citrus: bergamot, petitgrain for fresh top notes
Woods: cedarwood, vetiver as a base
Musks as a clean base extension
